What is Disability Justice?
“A disability justice framework understands that:
- All bodies are unique and essential.
- All bodies have strengths and needs that must be met.
- We are powerful, not despite the complexities of our bodies, but because of them.
All bodies are confined by ability, race, gender, sexuality, class, nation state, religion, and more, and we cannot separate them. ” Sins Invalid
Intersectionality is discussed extensively in relation to disability justice. Unfamiliar with it? Watch this 2 minute video.
SJSU Student Voices
Note: the below video is a placeholder we hope to embed in the page. Otherwise, we will embed some art or video
We hope to be able to compile student responses and make a video by the time the website is ready to launch. However, it is dependent upon receiving enough student responses (we need at least 2-4 more).
We are asking students with disabilities at SJSU to describe their experiences at SJSU, particularly:
- What do you want faculty to know about who you are and why disability justice is important?
- Why is disability justice important to you?
These students are aware of how their stories would be shared if they choose to contribute.
About This Project
The goal of this toolkit is to provide resources to SJSU faculty who are interested in exploring disability justice and its relevance in higher education. It was conceived of by a faculty learning community composed of Deborah Hicks, Julian Vogel, Karen Bell, Saili Kulkarni, and Sudha Krishnan. The original version of the toolkit was created by five Masters students in Library and Information Science: Avril Frasché, Elizabeth Larson, Jesus Parra Carrillo, Lydia Lopez, and Madeline Wetta.
